THE PROJECT
Cicada Innovations is the home of deep tech in Australia. The Sydney-based incubator works with deep tech ventures tackling some of the world’s most pressing problems, applying cutting-edge science such as advanced materials, synthetic biology, and AI to challenges like the future of human health, food security, and the climate crisis.
OBJECTIVES
Cicada Innovations sought to establish a cutting-edge incubator for startups within their existing space in the Westmead Health and Innovation District. They engaged PMG to design and adapt several options within the space, including small offices, coworking areas, amenities, and meeting areas.
DESIGN SOLUTIONS
To meet Cicada Innovations’ objectives, PMG developed a multifaceted design strategy. A range of small offices was conceived that could be combined to accommodate startups of different sizes. The primary challenge was optimising natural light in this heavily built-out floor plan.
The health and medical focus of the location was subtly referenced in the choice of materials, color palette, and built form. The furniture was meticulously designed for ease of reconfiguration, aligning with the evolving needs of startups. To foster a design that allows individuals to fully immerse themselves in their important work within the various spaces, a minimalist and neutral palette was adopted. Crisp and clinical white offers the foundation, with a subtle infusion of warmth and playful elements carefully incorporated to enhance the ambiance.

Additionally, a captivating feature film graphic on the hallway glazing illuminated the space while serving as a nod to the medical industry. Circular perforation details throughout the design paid homage to test tube holders, reinforcing the space’s connection to the medical precinct.
PMG successfully transformed the space into the Cicada HealthTech Hub, a state-of-the-art incubator for health-tech startups. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design solutions, including adaptable office spaces and unique aesthetics, can create an inspiring environment that fosters innovation and supports startups on their journey to tackling critical global challenges.
